Getting around Lombok

Public transport on Lombok is limited, so most visitors use drivers, scooters or taxis — plus boats to the islands. Here is how each works.

Private car and driver

The most popular way to travel between regions. A car with an English-speaking driver for a day is good value, especially for two to four people, and the driver doubles as an informal guide. Book through your hotel or online (see real products on our Senggigi tours page). Agree the route, hours and what is included (fuel, parking, driver’s meals) in advance.

Scooters

Scooters are widely rented in Kuta, Senggigi and other tourist areas. They give freedom to explore beaches, but Lombok’s roads are hilly and busy, with sand on corners and trucks on the main routes. Ride only if you are experienced, hold a valid licence for motorbikes (including an International Driving Permit where required) and are insured; wear a helmet; avoid riding at night.

Taxis, apps and harbour transport

Taxis, apps and harbour transport

Metered taxis operate in Mataram, Senggigi and from the airport. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek work in and around Mataram and some other areas, though local agreements may restrict pick-ups in certain places. At Bangsal harbour, cars must park away from the jetty; walk or take a horse cart for the last stretch, and buy public-boat tickets at the official office.

Buses and bemos

DAMRI buses connect the airport with Mataram, Senggigi and some other towns on fixed routes. Local minibuses (bemos) still run on some routes but are slow and irregular — suitable for adventurous travellers with time to spare.

Boats

  • Gili Islands: public boats and speedboats from Bangsal or Teluk Nare (15–30 minutes).
  • South-west Gilis: chartered boats from Tawun, Tembowong or Pelangan in Sekotong.
  • Pink Beach and the south-east: chartered boats from Tanjung Luar.
  • East Gilis: boats from Transat or Labuhan Pandan.
  • Surf breaks: boats from Gerupuk to the reefs.
