Festivals & events

  • Bau Nyale (usually February or March) — the south-coast festival includes cultural performances.
  • Weddings and the nyongkolan procession — on weekends you may meet a wedding procession with drums on the road; enjoy it and be patient in traffic.
  • Ramadan and Eid — village visits continue, but be extra discreet with eating and drinking in public during the fasting month.

Our advice

Visit Sade or Ende early in the morning, before the tour groups arrive and while the light is soft.
