Senggigi Travel Guide

Where to stay, eat and swim on the west coast, plus practical tips.

Areas

  • Central Senggigi — restaurants, shops and mid-range hotels in walking distance.
  • Mangsit and Malimbu — quieter beachfront resorts and villas.
  • Sire, Medana and the north-west — luxury resorts, close to the Gili harbours; you will rely on hotel transport.

Food

Seafood and Sasak dishes are the local strengths: grilled fish with sambal, ayam taliwang, sate rembiga (spiced beef satay, a Mataram favourite). Senggigi also has international restaurants; some are seasonal.

Swimming

Bays on the west coast are generally calmer than the south, but watch for currents off the headlands and boat traffic near the fishing beaches.

Money and practicalities

ATMs and minimarts are along the main road. Hotels and larger restaurants take cards.

Safety

Senggigi is generally safe. The usual cautions apply: lock valuables, ride scooters only if experienced, and take care on the dark coast road at night.

Sample plans

Morning in Mataram (Islamic Center, Mayura, Narmada and Lingsar) and Banyumulek pottery; back for sunset.

FAQs: Senggigi

Frequently asked questions

Is Senggigi still worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a quiet, good-value base with calm beaches and sunsets, close to the Gilis and Mataram. Do not expect big nightlife.

Can I see the Gili Islands from Senggigi?

On clear days, yes — from the Malimbu viewpoints in particular.

Is it better to stay in Senggigi or Kuta?

Senggigi suits sunsets, calm swimming and trips to the Gilis and Mataram; Kuta suits surfing, wilder beaches and a livelier scene. Many visitors do both.

How do I get from Senggigi to the Gilis?

Drive 30–45 minutes to Bangsal or Teluk Nare and take a public boat or speedboat; some fast boats from Bali also stop on the west coast.
