Gili Islands Travel Guide

How the Gilis fit into a Lombok trip — the short version.

Day trip or stay?

A day trip from the mainland is possible but rushed. Two nights or more let you enjoy sunsets, early snorkelling and the quiet evenings without the commute.

Combining with Lombok

A common pattern is Bali → Gilis by fast boat → Lombok mainland (Senggigi, Senaru or Kuta) → fly out from Lombok. The reverse works just as well.

Money

ATMs exist on Trawangan and Air, fewer on Meno; bring some cash from the mainland. Prices are higher than on Lombok.

Respect

The islands are home to Muslim Sasak communities. Swimwear belongs on the beach; cover up in the villages.

Sample plans

Day trip

Early boat from Bangsal to Gili Air, snorkel trip around the islands, lunch, back by late afternoon.

Three nights

Two nights on Trawangan or Air, one on Meno, with a snorkelling trip and an island-hopping day.

Gilis + Lombok

Arrive from Bali by fast boat, 3 nights on the Gilis, then Senaru for the waterfalls and Kuta for the beaches.
