Kuta & Mandalika Travel Guide

Where to stay in and around Kuta, eating and nightlife, beach safety, money and sample plans.

Areas

  • Kuta town — walkable, social, full of cafés and surf shops; best for independent travellers.
  • Mandalika beachfront — large resorts east of town on a quieter stretch; best for families and couples.
  • The hills — villas and boutique hotels with views; you will need transport.

Food and nightlife

Kuta has the widest choice of food in southern Lombok: Sasak warungs serving ayam taliwang and plecing kangkung, seafood, smoothie bowls, pizza and good coffee. A handful of bars host live music and parties, mainly in the high season — far quieter than Bali.

Beach safety

Many south-coast beaches have strong currents, rips and shallow reef. Swim only in calm conditions and sheltered spots, never alone, and ask locally. There are few lifeguards.

Money

ATMs are available in Kuta. Cash is still king at warungs and for parking; larger hotels and restaurants take cards.

Safety and scams

Petty theft from scooters and rooms occurs — lock valuables away and avoid leaving bags on parked bikes. At remote viewpoints, travel in daylight and in company.

Sample plans

Day 1: town and Merese

Settle in, swim at Kuta beach, then ride to Tanjung Aan for the afternoon and climb Bukit Merese for sunset.

Morning boat to the breaks at Gerupuk (lesson or just watching), then west to Mawun and Selong Belanak for the afternoon.

Day 3: culture or Pink Beach

Visit the Sasak villages of Sade and Ende and the weaving village of Sukarara — or take a full-day boat trip to Pink Beach.

FAQs: Kuta & Mandalika

Frequently asked questions

Is Kuta Lombok like Kuta in Bali?

No. It is a small, relaxed surf town with no big clubs or high-rises, although it has grown quickly and the Mandalika resorts have brought more development.

Can you swim at the beaches?

At some, in calm conditions — Kuta bay and Tanjung Aan are usually the gentlest. Many others have strong currents. Ask locally and never swim alone.

When is the MotoGP?

The date varies from year to year — in recent years late September or October. Check the official MotoGP calendar and book accommodation early.

Do I need a scooter?

It helps, but drivers and tours cover all the main beaches. Only ride if you are experienced and properly licensed and insured.

How far is Kuta from the airport?

About half an hour by car, which makes it a good first or last stop on Lombok.
