Dress and etiquette
Mataram is conservative. At mosques, cover arms and legs (women should also cover their hair; scarves or robes may be provided). At Hindu temples, wear a sarong and sash, and do not enter if menstruating, as local rules ask. Remove shoes where indicated.
Food
Mataram is the best place to eat Sasak food. Try ayam taliwang, plecing kangkung, sate rembiga and nasi balap puyung. Evening food stalls appear along several main roads.
Shopping
Malls, markets and craft shops: Cakranegara’s market for everyday life, Banyumulek for pottery, and pearl shops — Lombok is known for South Sea pearls; buy only from reputable dealers.
Money
ATMs are plentiful. Most hotels and malls accept cards.
