The sights
The summit
The final ridge climbs steeply through volcanic sand to a rocky top at 3,726 metres. At dawn the mountain throws a triangular shadow over the clouds, and on a clear morning you can see Bali’s Mount Agung, the Gili Islands and Sumbawa.
ℹ️ Reached on guided treks of two days or more, usually from Sembalun. About 3–4 hours up from the rim camp. Very cold and windy before sunrise.
Segara Anak lake and Gunung Barujari
The caldera lake — its name means “child of the sea” — is several kilometres long and vividly blue-green. From its shore rises Barujari, a black cone that has erupted several times in recent decades. Pilgrims come to pray, porters fish for the lake’s carp and tilapia.
ℹ️ About 2,000 m. Reached on three-day treks or as a steep descent from a rim. Hot springs are a short walk from the lakeside camp.
The Senaru crater rim
After hours of climbing through forest and then open grassland, the trail tops out on the northern rim and the whole caldera appears at once — lake, cone and summit — with the sun setting behind Bali.
ℹ️ About 2,640 m. On one- and two-day treks from Senaru. Allow roughly 6–8 hours up and 4–5 down.
Sendang Gile waterfall
A tall double cascade pouring over a fern-draped cliff into a shallow pool, reached by a few hundred steps down through the forest from the village. It is the most accessible big waterfall on Lombok.
ℹ️ Entry ticket at the Senaru gate (check current fee); local guides are often required or strongly encouraged. 15–20 minutes’ walk down. Allow an hour.
Tiu Kelep waterfall
Half an hour further upstream — along an irrigation channel and across the river on foot — water falls in veils around a wide pool you can swim in. Many visitors think it the most beautiful waterfall on the island.
ℹ️ Usually combined with Sendang Gile on one ticket. Wear shoes that can get wet; the crossing can be knee-deep and is unsafe after heavy rain. Allow 2–3 hours for both falls.
Senaru traditional village
At the top of the village a fenced hamlet of thatched bamboo houses is still home to Sasak families who keep older customs. A local guide explains the layout, the rice barns and daily life.
ℹ️ Visits by donation, usually with a guide. About 30–45 minutes. Ask before photographing people.
The Torean valley
A dramatic gorge on the north-western side of the mountain, with steep walls, hot streams and waterfalls, used by some treks as a route into or out of the caldera.
ℹ️ Only on guided treks; opening depends on the park and conditions. Steep and exposed in places.
Bayan Beleq mosque
A low, thatched-roofed mosque of bamboo and wood near Bayan, widely considered one of the oldest on Lombok. It is the spiritual centre of Wetu Telu, a local tradition that blends Islam with older Sasak beliefs.
ℹ️ Usually viewed from outside or with a local caretaker. Dress modestly. 20–30 minutes, about 15 minutes’ drive from Senaru.
