Senaru or Sembalun?
Senaru is greener and closer to the west coast and the Gilis, with the waterfalls on the doorstep and the classic forest route to the northern rim. Sembalun (see its own guide) is higher, cooler and more open, and the usual start for the summit. Many treks go up one side and down the other, with transfers arranged by the operator.
Choosing a trek operator
Book either through a well-reviewed package online or with an established local operator in Senaru or Sembalun. Ask what is included (park entry, porters, tents, sleeping bags, meals, water, transfers), the group size, the guide’s experience and how rubbish is handled. A reputable operator will also be frank about closures and your fitness.
Food
Guesthouse restaurants serve Indonesian staples — nasi goreng, mie goreng, fried tempeh and fresh fruit — and some cook Sasak dishes such as plecing kangkung (water spinach with spicy tomato sambal). On treks, porters cook surprisingly good meals over gas stoves.
Money
There are few or no reliable ATMs in Senaru. Bring enough cash in rupiah for entry tickets, guides, tips and meals; withdraw in Mataram, Senggigi or Tanjung on the way.
Safety
- Never trek without a licensed guide; weather turns fast and the summit ridge is exposed.
- Drink plenty of water and use sun protection — the open slopes are hot by day and cold at night.
- At the waterfalls, keep out of the river after heavy rain; flash floods are possible.
- Tip porters and guides directly; they carry heavy loads for modest pay.
Sample plans
One day: the waterfalls
Leave the west coast early, walk to Sendang Gile and on to Tiu Kelep, have lunch with a valley view, then visit the traditional village and Bayan Beleq mosque before the drive back.
Two days: the crater rim
Sleep in Senaru, start at first light through the forest and reach the rim for sunset over the caldera. Watch sunrise over the lake, then descend to Senaru by early afternoon.
Three days: summit and lake
Up from Sembalun to the rim, summit at dawn on day two, then down into the caldera to camp by Segara Anak and soak in the hot springs, finishing on day three via the Senaru rim.
