Because a licensed guide is compulsory on the mountain, booking a package is the normal way to trek. Packages differ in route (Senaru rim, Sembalun rim, summit, lake), length, group size and the quality of equipment and food. On this mountain the cheapest offer is rarely the best value: the savings usually come out of porters’ pay, sleeping bags and safety.
The products below are real GetYourGuide listings, with prices and ratings taken from its partner feed in October 2026. Read each one carefully — especially what is included for transfers, the night before and park fees — and check the operator’s current notes on trail openings.

Booking tips
- Be honest about fitness. Summit day starts around 2–3 am with a steep climb over loose volcanic gravel, followed by a descent of well over 2,000 metres. If in doubt, choose a crater-rim trek.
- Ask about porters, group size and rubbish. Good operators pay porters fairly, cap group sizes and carry all waste off the mountain, which has a real litter problem.
- Pack for cold. Rim camps can drop to just a few degrees above freezing. Bring a warm jacket, hat, gloves, a head torch and proper shoes; check whether sleeping bags are included.
- Check the season and closures. The national park normally closes the trails for the wettest months (usually January to March) and can close them at short notice for weather, volcanic activity or other reasons. Your operator will confirm.
- Insurance. Make sure your travel insurance covers trekking at altitude (above 3,700 m).
- Waterfall days are flexible. Senaru’s falls are open all year, but the Tiu Kelep river crossing can be impassable after heavy rain.
