The sights
Pergasingan hill
A steep grassy ridge rising straight out of the valley. From the top at dawn you look down on the geometric fields of Sembalun, with Rinjani’s summit catching the first light. It is the most popular short hike in the area.
ℹ️ About 1.5–2 hours up on a steep path. Entry fee and local guide usual. Camping on top is sometimes allowed; ask locally.
The valley fields
The flat valley floor is one of Lombok’s main vegetable gardens, famous for garlic and, increasingly, strawberries. Walking or cycling the farm roads, you pass farmers at work with Rinjani as a backdrop.
ℹ️ Free to walk. Some farms offer strawberry picking for a fee in season; ask your homestay.
Sembalun Lawang village
The larger of the two villages, with markets, homestays and trek offices. From the air — or a hill — it is a dense cluster of roofs surrounded by fields.
ℹ️ Free. Mornings are liveliest.
Pusuk Sembalun pass
The road from the north coast climbs in tight hairpins to a pass with roadside viewpoints over the valley — a spectacular approach on a clear day.
ℹ️ Viewpoints along the road; a few warungs serve coffee. Mist is common in the afternoon.
The Sembalun trail and savanna
Rinjani’s Sembalun route crosses open grassland and gentle hills before climbing steeply to the rim. Even a short walk on the lower trail shows a very different mountain from the forested Senaru side.
ℹ️ Entering the park trail requires registration and a guide. Hot and exposed by day.
Plawangan Sembalun crater rim
The rim camp at about 2,640 metres where summit trekkers spend the night, looking down into the caldera and Segara Anak lake.
ℹ️ On guided treks only, typically 6–8 hours from the trailhead.
Bukit Selong viewpoint
A small hill above a cluster of traditional thatched houses (Desa Adat Beleq), with a classic view over the fields to the mountains.
ℹ️ Short climb of 10–20 minutes. Small entry fee. Good at sunset.
