Where to stay
Sembalun Lawang is closest to the Rinjani trail office and Pergasingan and has the widest choice of homestays and lodges. Sembalun Bumbung is quieter and more rural. Places with a view of Rinjani are worth a little extra.
What to pack
Nights can be chilly by Lombok standards, so bring a fleece or light jacket. For Pergasingan you need a head torch, good shoes and water. Sun protection matters on the open hillsides.
Food
Homestays cook simple Indonesian meals. Try local vegetables, which are the valley’s pride, and the strawberries in season. There are small warungs in both villages but no nightlife — Sembalun goes to bed early.
Money and connectivity
Carry cash in rupiah; card payments are uncommon. Mobile coverage is generally fine in the villages but patchy on the trails.
Respect
Sembalun is a conservative farming community. Dress modestly in the villages, ask before photographing people and stay on paths through the fields.
Sample plans
One night
Arrive by early afternoon, walk up Bukit Selong for sunset, sleep early and climb Pergasingan for sunrise before driving on.
Two nights
Add a day for a waterfall or the farm roads and a strawberry farm, or a half-day on the lower Sembalun trail with a guide.
With a summit trek
Sleep in Sembalun, start the two- or three-day Rinjani trek the next morning, and finish via Senaru or back in Sembalun.
