The sights
Selong Belanak
A wide bay of soft sand with gentle, rolling waves for much of the year — the island’s main learn-to-surf beach. Outrigger fishing boats rest at one end, surf schools at the other.
ℹ️ About 30–40 minutes west of Kuta. Parking fee; boards and loungers for rent.
Mawun
A sheltered horseshoe of sand between two steep headlands, with calm water on most days and a relaxed row of warungs. One of the prettiest beaches in the south.
ℹ️ About 20 minutes west of Kuta. Small parking fee.
Mawi
A rugged bay known for a powerful reef break that attracts experienced surfers. The beach is good for watching, less so for swimming.
ℹ️ About 45–60 minutes west of Kuta, the last stretch on a rough road. Parking fee.
Ekas Bay
A vast, quiet bay in the south-east with reef breaks at its mouth and a few remote lodges on its shores, reached by road or by boat across the bay from Awang.
ℹ️ About 1–1.5 hours from Kuta by road. Surf trips by boat from Gerupuk or Awang.
Buffalo on the beach
In the late afternoon herders drive their water buffalo along the sand at Selong Belanak — one of the most photographed scenes on Lombok.
ℹ️ Free. Usually late afternoon; keep a respectful distance.
The coast road viewpoints
The roads between Kuta, Mawun and Selong Belanak climb over headlands with views down onto the bays — stop and look, but pull well off the road.
ℹ️ Free. Some viewpoints charge a small fee.
