Which beach for whom?
- First-time surfers: Selong Belanak.
- Swimming and a calm day: Mawun (on gentle days).
- Experienced surfers: Mawi, the reefs of Gerupuk and Ekas.
- Photographers: Selong Belanak at sunset with the buffalo; the headland viewpoints.
Surf schools
Choose a school with small groups, proper boards and English-speaking instructors. Ask about insurance and what happens if conditions are poor.
Food
Beach warungs serve grilled fish, fried rice and fresh coconuts. Selong Belanak has a few cafés; for more choice, return to Kuta in the evening.
Safety
Currents are strong at many beaches; lifeguards are rare. Do not swim alone or after drinking. Leave the reef breaks to the experienced. Avoid riding the coast roads after dark.
Money
Carry small notes for parking, loungers and warungs; there are no ATMs at the beaches.
