Where to stay
Homestays and small resorts are spread along the lanes north of the village centre and in the fields themselves. A place in the paddies with a veranda is the whole experience; check reviews for hot water and mosquito nets.
Guides
Local guides know the field paths, the families and the monkeys’ habits. Book through your homestay or a well-reviewed tour; agree the route, duration and price in advance.
Food
Expect generous home cooking: rice, vegetables from the garden, tempeh, chicken and sambal. Some homestays offer cooking classes.
Money
Bring cash in rupiah — there are few or no ATMs in the village itself; Kotaraja and Masbagik are the nearest towns with banks.
Etiquette
This is a conservative, mostly Muslim farming area. Cover shoulders and knees in villages, and ask before photographing people.
